Primary Purpose

The Safety Management System Advisor (SMS Advisor) will be responsible for contributing to the effective deployment and ongoing management of SDG&E’s Safety Management System (SMS) by providing support for the SMS implementation and change management efforts to operationalize developed framework and processes. The SMS Advisor will engage and serve as primary point of contact with SMS Champions and Business Unit representatives. This role will continually meet with SMS Champions and Business Unit representatives to deliver SMS messaging, materials and training as well as help validate and confirm compliance and adherence to SMS processes and procedures. The SMS Advisor will solicit and collect stakeholder feedback and data to measure and evaluate program effectiveness; provide analysis for developed SMS processes to identify opportunities for  continuous safety improvement based on feedback, data, lessons learned, and best practices; successfully collaborate with internal departments,  cross-functional teams, consulting resources/SMEs and vendors to align SMS tenets and drive comprehensive program plans and timelines; work with internal and external stakeholders to provide support during the operational transition and ongoing management of  the SMS framework and processes; and facilitate SMS  support amongst a large cross-functional group of indirect reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop the SMS implementation plan for internal employee teams, contractors and consultants across the company, which align the SMS objectives and overall program goals.
  • Deploy comprehensive SMS implementation plan by advising, facilitating, and partnering with business unit leaders to ensure the essential elements of the SMS are successfully implemented within the designated timelines.
  • Survey, collect feedback and data from internal and external stakeholders to assess program and process effectiveness and identify areas for continuous safety improvement. Must have the ability to positively interact, support and influence stakeholders when sharing information on program progress.
  • Develop and prepare reports to keep internal teams apprised of key metrics and performance indicators.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4 years in safety, compliance, field, operations, training, project or program advisor or specialist.
  • Requires knowledge of change management concepts with ability to create awareness of the project plan and objectives and drive desired outcomes.
  • Ability to collaborate and work successfully as a team and with team members of varied background and skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to manage scope, schedule, risks and compliance-related tasks.
  • Problem solving and innovation skills.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations required.
  • Ability to apply understanding of processes, procedures and established practices.
  • Must demonstrate creative thinking and personal initiative and have the ability to handle the demands of a dynamic work environment.
