Quantitative Term Trading Analyst


Position Summary:

Work within the mid term trading team to help identify opportunities in power trading through advanced fundamental and statistical analysis.  Develop and conduct quantitative computer modeling and predictive analytics for energy markets with a focus on identifying opportunities in power and cross commodity trading.  Maintenance of analytical data and software for conducting necessary analysis and creating consistent reporting.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Advanced analysis of energy trading opportunities utilizing available market data.
    • Identifying, collecting, and cleaning the data
      • Internal resources are available to facilitate this process
    • Application of various modeling disciplines to trading valuations
    • Use of internally developed or other quantitative modeling software
  • Maintain and grow understanding of complex quantitative energy market relationships through continuous communication and exploration with traders including supply stack modeling, other commodity market balance sheets, and scenario analysis.
  • Provide analytical insight used to develop long-term points of view in power and gas.
  • Interaction with trading group to answer questions on prospective transactions in a team-oriented and collaborative environment.
  • Dependable, reliable, and predictable attendance is required.
  • Preform other duties as assigned.

Basic Requirements:

  • B.S. in Engineering, Math or Science is preferred, or comparable employment experience is required. Undergraduate studies should include supporting study such as data science, economics, and statistics
  • Two years experience at a commodity trading firm with analysis experience
  • Advanced knowledge of statistics
  • Experience in SQL, Python, VBA, Tableau, R, Stata, Matlab or proven ability in other programming languages
  • Curious, inquisitive, creative and self-motivated with a passion for applied statistics and data analysis
  • Experience working with large data sets and database design techniques

Preferred Requirements:

  • Strong background in data mining and cleansing
  • Understanding of optimization theory, along with related algorithms and tools
  • Experience with machine learning data preparation concepts (cross validation, folding, boosting, feature engineering) with clear understanding of time series related concerns
  • Modeling experience in PJM, MISO, SPP, and/or ERCOT
  • Familiarity with available data sets from ISOs and other entities

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The job will require sitting in an indoor office environment, the need to visually read various written materials including, but not limited to paper documents and computer monitors.  The job may also require standing, bending, walking, lifting up to 10 lbs., carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, crouching, driving, and airline travel.

The incumbent will have the ability to use standard office equipment such as PC, printer, telephone, calculator, and copy and fax machines.  Travel required to meetings in other office buildings including local and domestic.
