The City of San Jose, Community Energy Department (CED) seeks a Deputy Director. This position is open by promotion. Range $124,012 – $193,173+ ~ five percent (5%) in on-going non-pensionable pay.

This position oversees Customer Account Management, Marketing, Communications, Energy Programs, and Legislative and Regulatory Policy functions, and reports to the Director of CED.

Ideal candidates are passionate about the environment, driven, creative, with a desire to be part of making a significant difference in the community. Minimum qualifications include:

  • BS/BA degree in business, public administration or related field.
  • Six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in senior level administrative and/or analytic work in energy or utility expertise in a public agency, utility, or private company.
  • Experience managing a work unit equivalent to a major division within a City department or large company with knowledge of Consumer Choice Aggregation (CCA’s) in CA.

This role requires senior level management experience, with skills building effective relationships internally and externally, managing multiple teams, effectively working with staff at various levels of experience and expertise, and experience hiring and developing staff to build high-performing teams and resolving complex personnel and organizational issues. Ideal candidates will bring significant customer development or sales experience including managing complex data streams and billing issues, managing a wide variety of customer types, such as residents, large tech companies, public agencies across the CCA, utility and energy communities.

Experience leading strategic policy, identifying new opportunities and initiatives that provide significant value to the organization and experience providing executive leadership, building effective coalitions, and advancing issues in the legislature or regulatory agencies will be most beneficial.

Strong candidates will have a professional history of complex project management experiences, demonstrating decision making, critical thinking, team building, and communication skills.
